Created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, Batman made his first appearance in Detective Comics issue #27 in 1939. His secret identity is Bruce Wayne, billionaire and owner of Wayne Enterprises in Gotham City. Taking on a bat-inspired persona, he trains himself to fight crime, fighting off a rogue's gallery of criminals.
The year after his introduction Batman gained its own publication. Capturing the imagination of fans across the world, different interpretation of Batman's character emerged. In the late 1960s, Batman was associated with a camp aesthetic thanks to the TV show, later returning to the character's darker roots in the late 1980s.
Today, Batman remains one of the most ubiquitous comic book characters, having featured in radio, film, television and animation. The tradition of different character interpretations continues, with Batman being portrayed on screen by 12 different actors since his inception.
