First published in 1974, Dungeons & Dragons is a fantasy tabletop role-playing game. Initially based on miniature wargames, D&D differs by allowing the player to create their own character instead of a military formation. These characters form a party and embark upon imaginary adventures within a fantasy setting, as determined by the game's designated player, the Dungeon Master.

The players face obstacles and challenges within this setting, working together to overcome them while gathering treasure and knowledge along the way. Each encounter gives the character experience (XP) which helps to increase the character's abilities, leading to more exciting encounters.

The game's early success led to further editions, each one building upon and refining the game's rules. The Fifth Edition was released in 2014 and remains current today.
